top-news

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in an exclusive interview with NDTV, questioned the Congress’ stance on electoral bonds, highlighting that the party also received such donations and implying that it could be seen as extortion. Shah emphasized that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi should acknowledge that his party has also benefited from such donations. According to Shah, Congress received donations worth ₹9,000 crore in proportion to the number of MPs, whereas the BJP received ₹6,600 crore.

The context of this discussion revolves around the electoral bonds scheme, which allowed anonymous funding to political parties. This scheme faced criticism from several opposition parties, including the Congress, who accused the BJP of engaging in a major corruption scandal through this system. The Supreme Court’s decision to declare the electoral bonds scheme as ‘unconstitutional’ further fueled the debate.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed regret over the Supreme Court’s decision, stating that the electoral bond scheme provided essential information about the flow of money and the stakeholders involved in political funding. This discussion coincides with the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections 2024, highlighting the significance of transparency and accountability in political funding processes.
